Objective

Xjismu.com was designed to be Malta’s first homegrown social media platform, creating a community-driven space where users could discuss social issues, voice opinions, and drive change. The goal was to challenge passive social media consumption and foster meaningful discussions around national topics.

The platform successfully built a strong user base, reaching 1.3K+ registered users and 300K total reach across platforms. It demonstrated the demand for alternative digital spaces that prioritize engagement and activism over traditional social media models.

Creating a Community-Driven Platform

Unlike mainstream social media, Xjismu wasn’t built for passive scrolling. Instead, it was designed as a hub for discussion, activism, and community-driven actions. This is an overview of some of the platform’s key metrics:

  • 1.3K+ Registered Users
  • 300K Total Reach Across Platforms
  • 4.1K Social Media Following
  • Featuring in the top 20 apps in the appstore

The platform was designed to fuel real discussions around national and social issues. We aimed to provide a digital safe space for users to engage with each other meaningfully, challenging the passivity of many mainstream platforms.

Key Features & Strategic Approach

  • User-driven Conversations: Encouraging real discussions around national and social issues.
  • Web & Native App: Ensuring accessibility and ease of use.
  • Bold, Impactful Branding: Designed to reflect the platform’s mission.
  • SEO & Social Growth Strategy: Leveraged organic search and engagement to scale the platform.

Challenges & Lessons Learned

Building an independent social platform was not straightforward and the biggest challenge we faced was user acquisition and retention. Growing a community from scratch required constant engagement and momentum.

To tackle these challenges, we focused on several key strategies:

  1. Encouraging Early Adopters: We focused on getting early adopters to drive conversations.
  2. Creating Discussions Around Trending Local Issues: By making the platform relevant to current events, we were able to keep users engaged.
  3. Running Targeted Outreach Campaigns: We boosted the platform’s visibility through strategic outreach.

Xjismu created a genuine space for meaningful dialogue in Malta, proving that people are looking for alternatives to mainstream social media platforms.

Final Thoughts

An important lesson learnt was that building a brand that resonates deeply with its audience is the foundation for long-term success. If we were to revisit Xjismu, we would focus more on retention strategies and sustainable engagement models from the very start, setting the stage for continued growth and evolution.

The journey has been incredibly insightful, from branding to web/app development to community building as a whole.
